Five common epoxy adhesives

1. DGEBA Epoxy Resin

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (commonly known as DGEBA epoxy resin) is the oldest and still the most widely used epoxy resin in adhesive formulations, mainly due to its cost-effectiveness and versatility. It is compatible with a broad range of curing agents, allowing the creation of adhesives with varied properties. Industrial epoxy adhesives based on DGEBA can be cured at room temperature or with additional heating.

DGEBA resins are available in low-molecular-weight liquids, semi-solids, solids, and brominated grades. Brominated epoxy resins are valued for their flame-retardant properties, making them widely used in printed circuit boards and electronic applications where fire resistance is essential.

2. Epoxy Phenol Novolac (EPN) Resins

Epoxy phenol novolac adhesives are well known for their excellent chemical resistance and high-temperature stability. Compared with standard BPA-based epoxies, they also provide superior adhesion performance. However, to maximize these properties, EPN adhesives require high-temperature curing. At room temperature, their performance is closer to that of DGEBA epoxies.

The curing cycle length significantly impacts the thermal stability of the cured adhesive. Due to their high viscosity, phenolic epoxies are generally more challenging to process, though low-viscosity alternatives have been developed in recent years. Still, these resins usually function as two-component epoxy adhesive systems.

3. Flexible Epoxy Resins

Epoxy adhesives are typically rigid; however, the incorporation of long-chain aliphatic epoxy resins improves their flexibility. The trade-off is reduced toughness, so flexible epoxies are rarely used alone. Instead, they are typically blended with other epoxy resins to create adhesives that are both strong and resilient.

When aliphatic epoxy resins are present at 10–30% concentration, adhesives achieve optimal flexibility without significantly compromising other mechanical properties. These systems are ideal for laminated safety glass, vibration and noise damping, and encapsulation of electronic components that undergo thermal cycling.

4. Waterborne Epoxy Adhesives

Epoxy resins are inherently hydrophobic and do not naturally disperse in water. However, water dispersibility can be achieved through chemical modification or emulsification. In waterborne epoxy adhesives, surfactants are used to separate water from the resin, and the choice of surfactant and processing parameters directly determine the adhesive’s mechanical and chemical stability.

These systems are increasingly valued for their low VOC emissions and environmental benefits, making them a sustainable alternative in coatings, construction, and industrial bonding.

5. Epoxy Acrylate Resins

Two main types of epoxy acrylates are commonly used in adhesives: vinyl ester resins and radiation-curable epoxy acrylates. Although technically epoxies, they behave more like polyester resins, offering easy processing, rapid curing at room temperature, and peroxide-based hardening.

Compared with DGEBA, epoxy acrylates exhibit lower viscosity, higher flexibility, and better wetting properties, though they also have higher shrinkage during curing. Radiation-curable epoxy acrylates can be cured by UV light or electron beam (EB) exposure, enabling fast processing in applications requiring low-viscosity, high-reactivity adhesives.

Long Curing Time: Epoxy adhesives often take several hours to fully cure, which can be a disadvantage for projects that require fast bonding.

Messy Application: Epoxy has a thick consistency that makes it difficult to apply neatly, and once it hardens, it is difficult to remove from surfaces and skin.

Potential Health Hazards: Some epoxy adhesives may contain harmful chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA) and epichlorohydrin, which can be toxic if inhaled or ingested.

Higher Cost: Epoxy adhesives are generally more expensive compared to other types of adhesives, which can be a drawback for applications requiring large amounts.

  • Type of Substrate Materials
    Identify whether the materials to be bonded are rigid (e.g., metals, ceramics, composites) or flexible (e.g., plastics, elastomers). Epoxy adhesives perform exceptionally well on rigid substrates where maximum strength and dimensional stability are required.

    Consider the operating environment, including exposure to extreme temperatures, high humidity, UV radiation, or aggressive chemicals. Epoxy adhesives are known for their excellent resistance to moisture, chemicals, and thermal stress, making them suitable for harsh industrial applications.
